Greta Thunberg's emotional speech to EU leaders. April 2019
She did it again! Greta Thunberg, the Sweedish teenager who started school strike movement, gave a powerful speech on climate change to MEPs in Strasbourg.
Swedish teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg says time is running out to halt climate change and she’s urging European politicians “to panic.”
Thunberg told Members of European Parliament today: “I want you to act as if the house is on fire.”
She said that “if our house was falling apart you wouldn’t hold three emergency Brexit summits and no emergency summit regarding the breakdown of the climate and environment.”
During a speech met with a standing ovation, Thunberg fought back tears as she warned about rapid species extinction, soil erosion, deforestation and the pollution of oceans.
In a reference to the international funding effort launched to rebuild the fire-ravaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, she urged the lawmakers to use “cathedral thinking” to tackle climate change.
Greta’s 10-minute speech was interrupted by frequent applause and ended with a 30-second standing ovation.
Take the test below and learn some more about climate change and global warming.

Great Speeches
Fired Up is a short animated film that depicts the origin story of President Obama’s famed “Fired up, ready to go” chant.
On a rainy day in June of 2007, President Obama found himself speaking to a subdued crowd in the tiny town of Greenwood, SC. He was exhausted, soaking wet, and beginning to doubt the whole campaign when a voice called out from the back, “Fired up, ready to go!”. The chant, started by one unassuming woman in a church hat, transformed the audience and went on to become a rallying cry in every corner of America.
With the audio of President Obama’s speech as the soundtrack, the film combines original animation by 13 artists from around the world.
Directed and Produced by Dan Fipphen and Elyse Kelly.
When it comes to political speeches, Obama is The Master. He is the finest political orator of our time. The video above s a wonderful showcase of his extraordinary ability. Enjoy!

Oral Presentations for Bachillerato
Oral presentations typically involve three important steps:
1) planning,
2) practising,
3) presenting.
Make also sure your presentation covers the following: introduction, main body and conclusion.
Practice, Practice, Practice:
- Practice as much as possible to achieve an easy delivery.
- Do not read your talk or memorize it.
- Concentrate only on the main points. Ignore details.
- Try to make your presentation lively and interesting. This does not mean telling jokes and anecdotes. But if you can think of interesting or amusing examples to illustrate your argument, use them.
- Write out everything you have to say, including examples etc. Rehearse what you are going to say until you are happy with it.
- present the topic.
- give your opinion on the topic.
- express (dis)advantages.
- link and sequence ideas.
- end with a clear summary or conclusion.
Choose one of the following topics to create a 1.30-minute presentation. You will be allowed to use some notes during your talk. However, full sentences or long phrases are not permitted. Please submit your notes to the teacher on completion of the oral exam.
